Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland supports the Scrap Trident campaign. In a letter to Brian Larkin, Coordinator of the Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre, the First Minister said:
“The use of Trident nuclear weapons is unthinkable and would result in catastrophic humanitarian consequences; they are neither welcomed nor wanted by the majority of people in Scotland. I therefore wholeheartedly support the aims of the Scrap Trident campaign, to focus attention on the UK Government’s plans to waste billions on the unnecessary and unwelcome replacement of Trident, while they continue to cut the social budgets on which those who are in greatest need rely.”
I wish you every success in this campaign, and I look forward to a Sccotland which is free from both the presence and the threat of nuclear weapons.
Rt Hon Alex Salmond MSP, First Minister of Scotland
