UK, BREXIT and The Road to Self Determination

Event Details

“As a result of the Tory-DUP deal and uncertainties created by Brexit, politics in Northern Ireland are more prominent than any time since the Good Friday Agreement. With the border and re-unification once again live issues, and the spectre of sectarianism never far off, how can the left respond to the new situation?

Seán Mitchell is an activist with People Before Profit and the author of the recently published Struggle or Starve: Working-Class Unity in Belfast’s 1932 Outdoor Relief Riots  the first dedicated study of a rare episode in the city’s history, when sectarianism was set aside in favour of a class-based response to a brutal and divisive state. Drawing from his research on the book, Seán will show how the triumphs and mistakes of these events can provide lessons for activists today.”

Joining Sean will be  author and activist Neil Davidson whose publications include the Deutscher Prize winning, “Discovering the Scottish Revolution”, “The Origins of Scottish Nationhood “and “How Revolutionary Were the Bourgeois Revolutions?”

Neil is a lecturer in Sociology at the University of Glasgow.  He is active in the Radical Independence Campaign and a member of RISE, Scotland’s Left Alliance.
